Huawei Opens $6m Tech Hub in Nigeria

The world leading information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, Huawei, has opened a technology hub in Lagos, Nigeria, built at a cost of $6 million.

Called Huawei Innovation and Experience Centre, the hub, spreading over 500m2 comes under the Huawei cloud concept, the company’s current global approach to making technologies and solutions more easily accessible and available across all corners of the globe as it enables visitors to share Huawei’s global resources in real-time.

At the impressive but unique opening ceremony formally signalling full take-off of the Centre, special guest at the occasion, Nigeria’s Communications Minister, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, acknowledged a number of memorandums of understanding that the Nigerian government has entered into with Huawei, essentially to underscore the importance of ICTs in today’s global space and Huawei’s relationship with Nigeria. Shittu noted:

“We are grateful to Huawei for continuously introducing the world’s leading ICT technologies to Nigeria, and continuing to assist Nigeria in promoting technological innovation, knowledge transfer and ICT infrastructure construction.”

Elaborating the importance of ICTs in socio-economic lives of countries today, Shittu stated:

“ICT has been globally credited for changing the course of history and adding value to human lives in many ways. In practically every sphere of life today, ICT is redefining how people live, how they work and how they entertain themselves.

“More recently, studies on socio-economic developments are showing that ICT not only has an impact on development, but is actually a necessary and required ingredient for development,” he said, and added on the cooperation with Huawei:

“We will further cooperate with Huawei to promote the development of (a) digital economy in Nigeria.”

The Chinese Consul-General in Nigeria, His Excellency Chao Xiaoliang explained that China developed “quite rapidly” during the last 40 years, and following that development “some Chinese companies have gradually grown strong enough to compete fearlessly” with the global giants and “begun to give off their own glaring light at the world stage,” saying “Huawei, of course, is one of them.”

He enthused: “From companies like Huawei, people from all over the world can learn that China is not only the world manufacturer, but also a future designer.”

Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Company Nigeria, Mr. Li Beifang (Frank Li), in his brief remarks at the occasion, while expressing Huawei’s dedication to investing in innovations in the ICT industry that driven by both “customer needs and new technologies,” said:

“Huawei will continuously adhere to its strategic focus, investment, and the relentless pursuit of strategic breakthrough to face all challenges together with its partners.”

The Huawei Innovation and Experience Centre will also serve as a training platform to nurture more ICT talents.

Thus, as a starting point, Huawei Nigeria will sign a “Joint Innovation MoU with the University of Lagos to actualise the plan.

Huawei entered Nigeria in 1999 almost unnoticed; over the last 17 years of development and growth, however, the company has become a big family with over 1,200 staff of which 70% are indigenous.

Already before now, Huawei has set up an ICT Training Centre in Abuja dedicated to assist Nigeria to develop its own ICT skills and infrastructure; the Centre has so far trained more than 12,000 employees, customers, suppliers as well as partners.

Last December, Huawei signed an MOU with The Federal Government of Nigeria, with the aim of providing more than 2,000 training opportunities to Nigerian youths.
