Nigeria to Market Broadband to Investors at ITU Telecom World 2017

It’s been 16 years of robust telecommunications growth and, rather than slow down, Nigeria is going to Busan, South Korea, this September with a simple, direct and unequivocal message: to market broadband internet to investors with a view to deepening penetration across the country that is home to over 180 million people.

The occasion could not have been more auspicious: it is the ITU Telecom World 2017.

Nigeria’s participation at the ITU Telecom World 2017, to be led by the Communications Minister, Barrister Abdulraheem Shittu, will be anchored by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) led by its Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta.

As the ITU Telecom World presents a unique international platform for influential figures from government and industry to connect with technology SMEs and entrepreneurs, to exhibit and explore partnership solutions, investment opportunities, shared ideas and best practices, it is a fitting market place for Nigeria to present the investment potentials in the country telecom industry especially to woo and win new investors.

The NCC in statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Tony Ojobo, said “although Nigeria has had a very robust telecommunications sector with active connected subscribers in the region of 150 million and about 110 per cent teledensity, the NCC believes that more efforts should be deployed to deepen broadband penetration.”

Ultimately, therefore, the participation of Nigeria at the yearly International Telecommunications Union (ITU) conference will focus on deepening the growing broadband segment of the market in the country, the statement added.

The ITU Telecom World 2017 holds in Busan, South Korea, from September 25 – 28, 2017.

Nigeria’s ‘high level’ delegation, according to the NCC statement, will be led by the Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, Nigeria’s Chief Telecoms Regulator and EVC of NCC, Prof. Danbatta, while industry stakeholders and operators will be on the delegation.

The ITU Telecom World 2017 is a global platform for major industry players, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Countries and Organisations to network and share ideas about new developments and technologies that would lead to better connected societies.

It is an event for International visibility of innovative Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Products/Services and solutions from around the World.

In general terms, it involves high level debates on the core issues affecting ICT industry, sharing knowledge and working for sustainable development.

The NCC statement says “by the National Broadband Plan, NBP (2013 – 2018) the country is expected to attain 30% broadband penetration by 2018, which currently stands at 21%.”

It added that “Nigeria will host an investment forum at ITU Telecom World 2017 and Broadband Nigeria will be at the focus of discussions.”

ITU Telecom World 2017 combines an international tech exhibition, a forum for sharing knowledge, a networking hub for corporates, governments and SMEs and the influential ITU Telecom World Awards programme.

It provides a unique international platform that brings together developed and emerging markets, public and private sector leaders, and industry representatives from across the entire information and communication technology (ICT) ecosystem.

The International Telecommunication Union, (ITU), is the leading United Nations agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs), driving innovation in ICTs together with 193 Member States and a membership of nearly 800 private sector entities and academic institutions.

Established over 150 years ago in 1865, ITU is the intergovernmental body responsible for coordinating the shared global use of the radio spectrum, promoting international cooperation in assigning satellite orbits, improving communication infrastructure in the developing world, and establishing the worldwide standards that foster seamless interconnection of a vast range of communications systems.

From broadband networks to cutting-edge wireless technologies, aeronautical and maritime navigation, radio astronomy, oceanographic and satellite-based earth monitoring as well as converging fixed-mobile phone, Internet and broadcasting technologies, ITU is committed to connecting the world.
