Omatek Founder, Mrs. Florence Seriki, Passes On

The stark reality of the transience of life on the earth plane has visited the Nigerian Information and Communications Technology industry, as a foremost female technology powerhouse, Mrs. Florence Seriki, passed away on March 3, 2017.

For a woman who took the Nigerian technology industry literally and literarily by storm from 1993, when she was just 30, to say that she lived ahead of her time would not be out of place; and, she went on to stamp her footprint on the Nigerian society like a colossus.

Born on August 16, 1963, Florence, who would have been 54 years this August, founded Omatek Computers in 1987, although it was the once popular computer show by the commercial section of the US embassy in Lagos, CTO Exhibition, that gave her the most visible platform to showcase her ingenuity when she took the bold step to launch Omatek Computers as a brand.

Announcing the passing on of Mrs. Seriki, Chairman of Omatek Ventures Plc., Dr. Timothy Farinre, said in a statement that “she died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (Idi-Araba, Lagos) on Friday, March 3, 2017 after a brief illness.”

A Fellow of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) as well as Fellow of the Society of Chemical Engineers, Seriki was born in Lagos to the Udebu family from Ebu in Delta State. She had her secondary education at the Reagan Memorial Baptist Secondary School, Sabo, Yaba between 1975 and 1980.

It is said that history of the school still has it that she put up a superlative academic performance all through her stay. She then attended the Federal School of Science, Lagos (F.S.S) for her A levels. Again, she emerged as the best overall student in lower six form. She went to attend the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and graduated in Chemical Engineering.

Pushing her restless quest to deliver technology dividends to Nigerians, Mrs. Seriki, in early 2003, took another giant stride opening a factory in Lagos to produce Nigerian made Computer Casings, Speakers, Keyboards and Mouse from completely knocked down (CKD). The factory produced made in Nigeria Omatek Computers, Notebooks and Servers with all its components made in Nigeria.

Florence expanded the business when she established Omatek Ghana as part of her vision towards making Omatek a pan African company. She also opened another arm of the business in Singapore as part of efforts to engage in effective research and development for the business.

Through her experience, Omatek grew to become a very relaxed atmosphere, which also helped her staff to performing at their best.

She won over 150 awards during her lifetime.

Married to Olalekan Seriki, an architect, Florence had three children: a boy and two girls.
