Galaxy Backbone Gets ISO/IEC 27001:2005 Certification

Galaxy Backbone Plc, the ICT Company of the federal government, has become the first public sector organisation in Nigeria to be awarded the ISO/IEC 27001:2005 Certification on Information Security Management System (ISMS) practice.
According to Galaxy Backbone Internal Auditor, Owoicho Igoji, who doubled as the Chief Information Security Officer until recently, “The journey to ISO/IEC 27001:2005 certification commenced in 2009. We remained focused on the key objective of putting in place a globally accepted standard of information security management process that would guarantee the trustworthiness of our Data Centre services, Network Operations and shore up the confidence of our customers and key stakeholders”.
He said the certification process involved the auditing and verification of Galaxy’s information Security Management Systems (ISMS) practices by the British Standards Institute (BSI), the accredited certification agency from the United Kingdom. “Passing a rigorous audit of this nature conducted by such a world-renowned standards body establishes Galaxy as a Nigerian company with processes at par with global standards,” he said.
Commenting on the certification, the company’s Group Head, Strategy & Development, Sadiq Abubakar, said that the benefits of the certification includes brand enhancement, reduced business risks, market differentiation, improved risk rating, evidence of due diligence, linkages with other management systems, proven capacity to address other industry standards and increased customers and stakeholders confidence and trust in the capacity of the company to safeguard their information assets.
“Galaxy Backbone Plc is the first Nigerian ICT company to achieve ISMS certification and joins a select group of only three organisations in Nigeria to be so certified,” he said. “This certification is also a positive milestone for the federal government as it resonates with the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan and underscores government’s commitment to achieving the National Vision 20:2020.
