Oracle Showcases products, Targets number one position

Driven by the vision to be number one in every country, Oracle Corporation, recently showcased two of its six hundred thousand products Exadata, a database software that provides extreme performance for both data warehousing and online transaction processing (OLTP) applications, and Exalogic, designed to transform data center standardisation and enable enterprises to bring together thousands of disparate, performance-sensitive workloads with maximum reliability, availability, and security.
Mr. Owen Hughes, Director for Exa technologies for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) who is responsible for Exadata and Exalogic products from an architecture perspective, said that the meeting was not really to launch the products rather to talk about the whole concept of engineer systems. He stated that the two engineer systems that were being announced are Exadata for database processing and Exalogic for business logic applications.
According to him, the meeting was to explain the value and philosophy behind engineer systems, reduce cost and improve processes by deploying engineer systems as opposed to going through the complicity, risk and cost of building everything yourself as this would afford organisations time to focus on their core business.
“Imagine that you work in a telecommunications company and you are spending all of this time architecting the environment, then you are not focusing on telecommunications. You are doing a generic task that can actually be done by somebody else better, somebody who understands the intricacies and details and the problems of building infrastructure.”
“From Oracle perspective the engineer systems we have is a combination of hardware and software that is engineered to work together in a kind of symbiotic relationship. The hardware is designed to run the software as well as possible and the software is designed to run on the hardware as efficiently as possible. That is what we mean when we talk engineer systems; it’s a combination of hardware and software,” Hughes said.
Speaking more about the products, Hughes revealed that Exadata is nearly three years old and is very successful since its launch with many customs in Europe, Middle-East and Africa and globally pretty much in every sector ranging from banking, manufacturing, telecommunications and public sector. While Exalogic is a baby product announced globally only last September and equally accepted throughout the globe in every segment of the economy.
“Nigeria customers were really excited about what we were talking about and they see the value of these products, Nigerian market is an amazingly dynamic market and probably the power house of central Africa. Definitely the power house of Western Central Africa, it is the most key market we see in central Africa without a doubt and that is a testimony today because two vice presidents from Oracle are here today for the customers.
“It is a great place to do business from my perspective because I have met amazing people in this country.  I have not been disappointed by the quality of people I have met and Central Africa have never ceased to amaze me by the quality of individuals working in organisations.” He added.
On how much the Oracle has invested in the Nigerian market, Hughes said it might be difficult to state that in terms of the dollar amount as the focus has been on making sure that spare parts are readily available, and investment on warehouse capability in their central hub to ensure that spare parts are made available within 24 hrs in the country as well as recruitment of supporting Nigerian engineers to help the Nigerian market with these products

In order to continue offering its teeming customers unmatchable quality products and innovation, Oracle spends $4.5 billion per annum on research and development which Hughes described as the key part of the Oracle Corporation’s business which would go a long way in achieving the company’s goal of being the number one in every segment and the vision to be number one where it is not. “So If Oracle ever has to leave behind a legacy in Nigeria which I hope it never does, it will be the fact that we deliver quality and innovative products.” He said.
